This book is the first in a trilogy of novellas that include "The Hungry Soul" and "The Hour of Judas." Written from the perspective of an elementary school boy during the post Korean War period in the 1950s, it paints Seoul as simultaneously bleak and impoverished but also "toy-like." Destined to rely heavily on an incompetent and impotent father, the young narrator lives in extreme poverty in an urban slum wracked by constant hunger yet still produces a story that is at times lovely and touching. Although born in Osaka, Japan, in 1942, Lee grew up in North Gyeongsang Province where his family immigrated immediately after Korea's 1945 liberation from Japanese colonial rule. He has become a prolific writer since winning a literary prize from the vernacular Seoul Daily in 1966. His works, lyrical in style, explore the darker side of psychology and society, revealing his deep interest in the roots of human pathos, violence, alienation and loneliness. |
